Elite Sports Academy<\/a>, a new private school in West Phoenix, brings academics and daily athletic training together on one campus. Its model divides the school day between classroom learning and focused training, with character development and recovery included in the design. ESA belongs to the Heritage family, as does American Classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That connection matters to the educational model. ESA follows the Heritage Academy curriculum. Its academic program<\/a> includes literature, mathematics, science, history, government, and economics, along with dual enrollment opportunities for college credit. The aim is a demanding education that fits the needs of committed athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The arrangement gives families a different way to organize a child’s development. Bringing teaching and training together can reduce the need to assemble separate programs across town. It also creates an opportunity for academic and athletic expectations to reinforce each other throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In our American Classroom conversation with ESA basketball coaches Sean Greene and P.J. Howard, that shared purpose came through repeatedly. Both spoke about preparing young people for the responsibilities that accompany talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Greene described meeting ESA’s teachers and being impressed by the attention students could receive in the classroom. Their work was a major reason he chose to join the school. For a coach building an ambitious girls’ basketball program, the quality of the academic environment belonged at the center of the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Howard explained how those expectations carry forward. A student who earns an opportunity to compete in college must also manage time, complete assignments, and accept responsibility without constant reminders. In his words, \u201cthe training will only get you the opportunity. The education is going to help sustain it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n College athletics has concrete academic requirements. Among the NCAA’s Division I standards are 16 approved core-course credits and a minimum 2.3 core-course GPA. Course approval and completion deadlines also matter, making early planning with a counselor essential. Learning to analyze a passage, defend an argument, or work through a difficult equation has value wherever a young person goes. A seventh or eighth grader may be the tallest player on the floor today. That does not settle the player’s future position. He wants those students learning to handle the ball, shoot, and make decisions, building skills that remain useful as they grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is a meaningful distinction for parents considering advanced training. Development requires a coach to look beyond what helps the team in the next game and consider what the individual needs over several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Greene described a complementary ambition for Arizona girls’ basketball. He wants to build on the talent already in the state, giving players the development and national competition opportunities he believes they need to advance. His enthusiasm centered on creating a stronger pathway for local athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Howard also described watching Greene work behind the scenes to find opportunities for his players. Those conversations, he said, were a regular part of their work together. The picture is of coaches investing in the circumstances that allow a student to improve and be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For a new school, these are commitments to build on. Families can follow how they become practice routines, individual feedback, and opportunities suited to each athlete’s stage of development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Howard’s vision extends into life beyond the court. He discussed students gaining experience in media production and learning citizenship, alongside the challenge of managing school and training. We want scholars to learn how to govern their own conduct: keep a commitment, accept correction, prepare carefully, and take responsibility when something goes wrong. Supporting a teacher’s reasonable deadline or encouraging a child to speak respectfully with a coach helps establish consistency between home and school.
